well the docs for DBD::mysql says that mysql_ssl=1 passed to the connect function should do that for the Perl/DBI. HOwever, I haven't used it, so I'm not sure if it's implemented yet, and if so in what version. In C not sure, but sure its in documentation somewhere. As to the DBD::mysql you can do perldoc DBD::mysql or go to
http://search.cpan.org and look for the module to see how to do it yourself.
