Glen,

Sorry, but I'm no expert in network config myself too. Especially on linux.
I hope I've given you the ways to check if it's fixed without mysql. Maybe talk to fellow network experts and see if you can resolve this.
Otherwise see the workaround on not using DNS names to connect, but IP addresses that I've proposed in my first post.
