I'm a rookie too, so maybe I'm telling you completely wrong
I remember when I installed the mysql server, the installation wizzard asked me wether or not I want to enable passwords... Maybe you chose NO, or you chose the automatic installation that didn't even ask this question, and then passwords are not really enabled on your server????
just an idea.
