Flush Privileges suddenly running very slow?

No sure exactly when it happened, but a couple weeks ago a FLUSH PRIVILEGES command issued to the server would execute in about 10 seconds. Today it's taking over two minutes, with no other activity on the server. Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? We haven't updated the server, mysql, or any config files. We've added a couple users and a couple tables but I can't see how going from 150 to 152 users, and 223 to 225 tables, is going to cause that extreme a difference.

There are no errors, every other command issued to the database seems to be responding normally, and it will eventually work, it just takes a much longer amount of time to execute FLUSH PRIVILEGES.

MySQL 5.0.26 running on a Gentoo server.

Any ideas appreciated.
