mySQL and VB.net for newbie

I have built a small database in mySQL called "lessons". I am trying to access it thru VB.NET. I have MySQL.data as a reference. I can't seem to figure out the very beginning code that would allow the database to be accessed from VB. All the examples I find use things like mySQLConnection, mySQLCommand, etc. VB does not seem to recognize any of these. Can someone please help me out?
thanks much,
Carl Hage
