MySqlMembershipProvider passwordFormat="Hashed" fails

I'm using a recent version of MySqlMembershipProvider 5.1.2.1. I got the membership provider to work using a passwordFormat="Clear", but if I set it to clear the management UI throws an exception when creating a user account.
