If you look at the source code for, it simply extends com.mysql.jdbc.Driver. It is not uncommon to provide backward compatibility by making a "wrapper" class, so old code continues to work.

Mark can probably give you more specific details, but I gather that he first implemented the MySQL JDBC driver as an open source project in Giant Java Tree

At some point later (June 2002), Mark joined MySQL AB. See

Connector/J release 3.0.0 (July 2002) changed the Java package for the JDBC driver to com.mysql.jdbc and changed the license from LGPL to GPL. See
