FYI, this seems to be related to the following bug:
http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=61662
Creating a test case that explicitly confirms that an inactive slave connection was pinged is proving slightly problematic, and may end up requiring more code development than the actual fix, but I hope to have it done soon.
