Kapil,

Somewhere, your code is calling Connection.isReadOnly(), which issues this SQL to the server

"select @@session.tx_read_only"

It appears RDS does not have that variable, even though MySQL 5.6 itself does (and has for some time):

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/server-system-variables.html#sysvar_tx_read_only

Workaround would be, don't have your code call isReadOnly(), file a bug against RDS, or patch the driver to not issue this call.
