O.K. I just found recommendation #4 on the O'Reilley site which counsels against storing binary data in MySQL as it will slow things down. The recommendation says to store the link to the file on the disk but lists the downsides of not being able to search what would have been the field, etc. Has anyone done this - perhaps concurrent use of text version in MySQL and Word file on disk?
