Try verify if it is a problem with PERL itself? Some languages have a problem with variables that eats up to much memory? Remember that when PERL gets the result from your Query it stores it in an array, and that array is placed somewhere in the memory. I am not at all an PERL expert so I cant tell if that is the problem. But it COULD be the issue.
