MySQL is slow.

I'm certain it must be an installation or usage problem. Problem occurs with both the normal mysql Driver and the Pure Perl mysqlPP.
Server - version 4.1.7 via TCP/IP
DBD-mysql 2.9003
DBD-mysqlPP 0.04
I have the mysql Client and Server on the same localhost machine. Am using Windows XP Pro SP2, Activestate 5.8.6.811.
