Troubles with utf8 in MySQL 4.1

If anyone can help me at least a little bit, I'd be grateful. I'm using MySQL 4.1.11 and PHP 4.3.11. I've set "CREATE DATABASE eshop DEFAULT CHARACTER SET utf8;" and everything works fine except for latin small letter c with caron. But if I use same letter just in php script then it is displayed right. When I save some text with this letter to db and then read it from db back it is shown in Firefix as ?? and in IE as some strange character. Other letters seems to work fine. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing it? Thanx in advance for any suggestions.
