Suggestion: Always use FetchAll. Then you have the resultset in a PHP structure and can use it once or repeatedly, as needed, and without puzzling over questions like you asked.

(Ok, so I don't really know the answer. I have never used PDO; sounds rather kludgy is some areas.)
