If you haven't yet looked at running PHP under PASE on the AS/400, I suggest you do this. This will not only solve your problem, it will also give you the option of running PHP directly on the AS/400 to access DB2 data. You can also install and run MySQL under PASE but I haven't tried this as I didn't see the need.
Go to the Zend website for the download. You must be running V5R4 to get the full benefits of PHP/PASE. Hope this helps.
