Access XP very slow query response

Hi all, I have just migrated from Access 97 to Access XP (front end), on a W2K Os, with the ODBC 3.5.11 connecting to MYSQL version 4 (back end). Before the upgrade Access 97 worked extremely well. However since the upgrade I am having serious performance problems on specifically the QUERIES on linked tables. These are running 2 to 3x longer and the exact same DB and data.
Any help on getting the performance crisis resolved is most appreciated. Even if it means coding some modules. I have heard of ODBCdirect but am not sure what it is and if this is the way to go...
Unfortunately we will not role back to Access 97.
