Migration Windows to Linux: Windows Limitations

I am planning to migrate an application from Windows2K to Linux on a bigger server.

One reason is to exploit 8GB of memory and I don't want to pay MS for Windows2003 to do it.
I assume neither Linux nor MySQL have any problem exploiting 8GB of memory, but does anyone know for certain?

The other reason is the apparently insuperable limit of 2048 file descriptors/process in Windows. I'm hitting this because I make extensive use of MySQL's MERGE engine which burns file descriptors. I have read that the ulimit parameter on linux sets the file descriptors limit as high as you want.
Does anyone know for sure?

... I do I have to just buy the hardware and find out :-)
