Using MySQL 4.0.24 and cant use auto_increment...?

Hello!
i just created my first Memory Storage Engine table. Problem is I cant use a auto_increment in versions < 4.1...
And because of that, im not sure how to add information to my table (with php). Just writing a standard "INSERT INTO table (name) VALUES ('$name')" is not working....?
