support for table references in stored functions

The manual states:
"Currently, stored functions created with CREATE FUNCTION may not contain references to tables. Please note that this includes some SET statements, but excludes some SELECT statements. This limitation will be lifted as soon as possible. "
Does anybody know when support for table references will be added? My company has developed a comprehensive content management solution which relies heavily on functions and stored procedures. Our successful migration to MySQL is pending the addition of this functionality.
