UUID column type

I have seen this type questions posted on the Internet quite a few times, but never got a clear answer.
What is the appropriate column type for UUID? Based on the mysql manual, a UUID is a 128-bit number. So, Should a char(16) column used to store a UUID number? will conversation be required?
