Thomas, I found an example in the official documentation section 13.7 SQL Syntax for Prepared Statements. I tried the interactive example using MySql command line and it does seem to work ok. Whether that translates into an SP to do what I want is another question. That can be my weekend project at home! If it does work reliably, I will post my SP just in case it has interest appeal to a wider audience!
