Such mods would change how the DB works; how would that illuminate how the DB works?

By "define a variable as being the same as a field on a table" do you mean define a var holding the name of the field, or define a var holding all its values in the table where it occurs?

Suggestion: learn thoroughly how to use MySQL before you set about changing it.
