Your trigger is conditioned on one specific column value. That's preposterous. NEW and OLD are not Trigger "extensions". They're intrinsic to MySQL Trigger logic, indeed they offer only way for the Trigger to identify the row being updated. Consider re-reading the manual page on Triggers.
