It's probably worth picking up a book that will walk you through a lot of the basics.

I've been using "PHP and MySQL Web Development" by welling and thomson, and it isn't too bad to learn from (but it's not cheap). It walks you through a lot of the installation stuff if you're doing it on your own machine, and it has a bunch of examples of things that are typical for a website, including code on a disk.

There are a lot of books out there that cover PHP and MySQL together-- even if you just read it one in a bookstore it would be a good start.
