You are using a significantly out of date version of mysql. Any reason you don't upgrade?
STR_TO_DATE() is available as of MySQL 4.1.1
I found a solution I had written a while back and put it online for you here:

If you can't figure it out let me know what you have problems with.
Essentially make a new column and convert your dates there and it will be easier to query them.
