Searching database for strings with Swedish characters

I use web-based genealogy software (TNG) that employs MySQL. I have many Swedish names in my family tree and there are many occurrences of Swedish-specific characters (ä, ö, å). I've tried to set up the MySQL database so the character encoding is UTF-8 with utf8_swedish_ci collation sequence. Nonetheless, my searches for some known strings fail. An example is to try to find occurrences of the string <ällstad C> (without the angle brackets) by entering it in the search field at http://askerko.net/genealogy/browsemedia.php. The search doesn't find any matches, but if I modify the search by dropping the leading ä, i.e. <llstad C>, I find 2 records, both of which do contain the string <ällstad C>.

If someone can suggest an explanation and solution to this problem I would greatly appreciate a reply.
