creating a table is there another way to do this?

Hi People,
I am reading the book The Joy of PHP. I am trying to create a table called inventory. I am getting errors when I type in the info to create a table. Years ago there was a way to import a file and create a table. I have since forgotten how to do this.
Right now I am copying the column info from the book and keep getting errors. I have also tried to do a show table inventory. I get another error. If you need me to I will write all of what I am trying to do with creating the table. The author switches around with caps and small characters. So it is a bit confusing.
Any help is appreciated.
