I realized that part of what I needed to do was only available in 4.1 and I was using 4.0.x, so I upgraded, and I was able to cobble together an overly complex solution that is probably extremely inefficient, but it works.
I will post as soon as I can clean up the code so it's not such an awful mess, but in the mean time, if anyone comes up with the "super-cool" answer I'd be very happy to find out what it is.
