I'm looking for a solution to this too. I can't believe the MySql developers don't consider this a bug. All I want to do is search on a phone number! If they want to have hyphen as an optional work break, there should be a programmatic way of changing it instead of having to recompile or try to figure out how to change the <ctype><map> in an unspecified way in an unspecified file.

I'm beginning to think recompiling would be the easier way to fix this, but in the future I need to be able to do installations for customers, and I don't want to have recompiling or editing some obscure file being part of the installation process.
