hebrew in mysql

Hi,
I have a strange thing going:
when asked to SELECT the string "ל-" in hebrew, it is selecting also "מ-".
Also, looking for "שלך" gives "שמי". Seems like the letters "lamed" and "mem" are causing some confusion in the search process.
I'm using mysql 4.1.
Any idea what could cause it?
