Question for you... (I am ignorant on Chinese collations.)
What happens with utf8_general_ci collation? Or utf8_unicode_ci? Does gb2312 do a "better" job of ordering Chinese? Can you teach me how Chinese 'should' be ordered?

True, the EXPLAIN would not look good -- since you are CONVERTing on the fly, every row has to be read. Must you stay with utf8? Can you add a column that is gb2312 and index it instead?
