is it a must for me to recompile from source?
or any other method to set the
- character_set_server
- character_set_database
- collation_server
- collation_database
permanently?

if recomplie is needed, may i also have the command i needed for compiling MySQL with charset utf8 on a RedHat 9?

folloing is my current MySQL setting: (+the setting i need)
mysql> SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'c%';
