If it's true that the data is UTF-8, it should have gone in a column with a utf8 character set, not a latin1 character set. Or the character_... variables should have been adjusted so that MySQL converts automatically from utf8 to latin1 during input. But I was only speculating about the causes, and there's no confirmation.
