help:how to show character set

i am a new user.my version of mysql is 4.0.27 .when i use command like this :
mysql> show character set;
always reply:
error 1064:you have an error in your sql syntax.check the manual that corresponds to your mysal server version for the right syntax to use near 'character set' at line1.
what should i do?
help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
