by the way, the above syntax works fine too:

mysql> show create table t1;
+-------+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| Table | Create Table |
+-------+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| t1 | CREATE TABLE `t1` (
`a` varchar(64) character set utf8 collate utf8_unicode_ci default NULL
) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 |
+-------+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
1 row in set (0.00 sec)

mysql> select a, a rlike '[[:<:]]test[[:>:]]' from t1;
+---------+------------------------------+
| a | a rlike '[[:<:]]test[[:>:]]' |
+---------+------------------------------+
| test | 1 |
| testing | 0 |
+---------+------------------------------+
2 rows in set (0.00 sec)
