Difficulty storing the french characters in the database (mysql)

Hello every one

I have a problem in inserting french characters into the database,
please tell me in detail what are the things i have to do (Configure)
in order to store them.

I tried to configure the mysqlconfig file which is inside the bin folder of mysql and the version i am using is 4.1.

When i tried to configure the mysqlconfig file,there i selected the multi liguial language option and at last when i tried to execute it then the server start error came.

One more thing i wanted to tell is in other databases the configuration is already done and we are able to store the characters

please reply with an answer at the earliest
