No, Æ <-> AE with utf8_unicode_ci.
If you want to know what equals what, then check the unicode.org page that we refer to in the manual

As for LIKE 'strasse', you're right, LIKE does some searching a character at a time.
Otherwise, LIKE '%e%' would return A-with-umlaut in some collations.
