Sorry, I posted the wrong second query. The answer you gave makes perfect sense for the query I posted.

explain partitions select localDateTime from t1 where localDateTime between '2008-05-22 00:00:00' and '2008-05-22 23:59:59'
1, 'SIMPLE', 't1', 'p0,p1,p2,p3,p4,p5,p6,p7,p8,p9,p10,p11,p12,p13,p14,p15,p16', 'index', '', 'PRIMARY', '8', '', 320406613, 'Using where; Using index'

In this example, the optimizer should be able to narrow down the partitions based on the date range in the select right?
