The best way to take advantage of multiple spindles is via RAID striping. (RAID-5 or RAID-10, if you want redundancy and crash protection, too.) I claim that it is even better than trying to hand pick which file goes on which spindle. All too often, your application will concentrate on one file, hence use only one spindle. But with striping, the activity is spread across multiple spindles, even for a single query.
