Partitioned tables are one of the use limitations for the first option and we can't avoid partitioning because of the sheer size of the database (about 22GB per monthly partition for just 1 table!)

I might have to play with v5.7 to see what's possible. Unfortunately "ALTER TABLE IMPORT PARTITION TABLESPACE" still requires physically copying gigabytes of data on disk to be imported @ the destination schema/server.
