I did that, and it got around the problem with the log files. However, now I get:

2020-02-24T01:50:58.152010Z 1 [ERROR] [MY-013168] [InnoDB] Cannot upgrade server earlier than 5.7 to 8.0
2020-02-24T01:51:03.153633Z 1 [ERROR] [MY-011013] [Server] Failed to initialize DD Storage Engine.
2020-02-24T01:51:03.154343Z 0 [ERROR] [MY-010020] [Server] Data Dictionary initialization failed.
2020-02-24T01:51:03.155149Z 0 [ERROR] [MY-010119] [Server] Aborting
2020-02-24T01:51:03.157052Z 0 [System] [MY-010910] [Server] /usr/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown complete (mysqld 8.0.17) Source distribution.

I know - I probably should have read the manual. In my defense, I just had the server install mysql, and I didn't know there was a version issue.

I'd happily just install version mysql 5.6 or 5.7 and call it a day - do you know how I'd do this for Centos 8?

Alternately, is there a way to massage the existing files so they'll get along with mysql 8?

Thanks again.
