Looking at the SlowLog on the Master can point to INSERT/UPDATE/REPLACE/DELETE queries that cause replication to be slow. Note that the Slave will be executing such queries one at a time. Also do SHOW PROCESSLIST (repeatedly) on the Slave -- lock for locks, slow SELECTs, etc. This could indicate interference between replication and readonly traffic.

And, yes, an 8-minute trigger is terrible.
