Hello Mr. James.

innodb_buffer_pool_size ~ 1GB
messages ~ 50 MB
subscriptions ~300 KB

Your query works best in situation 2: Few message entries and/or few, or zero, subscription entries that are relevant

The execution time is: situation1: .15 secs, situation2: .000x secs

Which is better than either/or queries above which takes 1+ seconds and .000x seconds and vice versa.

I'm hoping there is a solution to have .000x seconds in both scenarios.
