Inability to use "range" for queries like
select ... where (c1,c2)>(value1,value2)
is a deficiency. If speed is your top priority over anything else consider using "HANDLER" syntax (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/HANDLER.html), it seems to be able to do exaclty what you want.
