Well, I have MySQL 5.7.18 running, the bug is in it (otherwise I wouldn't have run into it in the first place). Doing some search, In the releasenotes I found:

Queries that contained UNION in a subquery and GROUP BY could return incorrect results. (Bug #24595639)

However, I was unable to find more about when it was solved precisely. I am glad it is solved in newer versions!

Thanks for the quick response, and also for the advise about casing. I'll build it in into our generator.
