Peter Brawley - Thanks for the response, but unfortunatly the methods listed in the link didn't help yet. I used the terminal command
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/MySQLWorkbench.app/Contents/MacOS/MySQLWorkbench
This caused MySQLWorkbench to crash on opening, but I didn't get the warningh box about malicious software. I then tried the nuclear approach with the terminal command sudo spctl --master-disable and checked it with spctl --status (returned assessments disabled) but MySQLWorkbench continued to crash on opening.
I plan to uninstall/remove the MySQL 8.0 and MySQLWorkbench; download fresh files from Oracle. I'll then do the master-disable, reboot the machine, and then reinstall MySQL and MySQL Workbench and see what happens.
