Hello list,
it turned out that the problem was not at all caused by duplicate data in the database:
When I created the backup using PhpMyAdmin 4.0.4.2, I also exported the views. When I had a look at the backup in a text editor, the backup contained the table data twice -- in the tables AND in the views.
Updating to PhpMyAdmin 4.2.1 AND manually removing the views from the export created a backup that could be restored without the error described above.
Problem solved.
