5.5 -> 5.6, am I hosed?

Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise
So, I ran the new installer (mysql-installer-web-community-5.6.14.0.msi) in order to ask it to update my 5.5 install to a 5.6 install. It suggested an update from 5.5.23 to 5.5.33 instead and I said 'OK'. After a couple of minutes my remote session ubruptly shutdown. A few minutes later I was able to relogin, but to a nice fresh desktop. :-( I tried the installer once more and it crashed partway in. So I checked 'Programs and Features' and it showed two instances of MySQL 5.5 installed where I'd only had one before. I figured one or the other was corrupt, so I did an uninstall of both, ran the installer again and it was able to install 5.6 cleanly... I think you know where I'm going now, when I look I find that I no longer have any of my existing databases! I do have what should be good data in C:\ProgramData\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.5, but I don't know how to load it up in 5.6. Am I going to have to backup that folder, uninstall 5.6, reinstall 5.5, copy the data back then upgrade once more? Or is there a way I can just load the 5.5 data (I already tried just copying the files, 5.6 wouldn't start with the 5.5 files).
