So, I found the 5.5 install image mysql-5.5.23-winx64.msi. I uninstalled all the 5.6 stuff, including the installer and workbench, then installer 5.5.23. It went through the process fine until close to the very end. It's displaying the MySQL Server Instance Configuration Wizard with checkmarks for both Prepare configuration and Write configuration file (C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.5\my.ini). It's been displaying the same thing for about fifteen minutes and when I select the window I get a Not Responding message. The my.ini file is there at the location it says it's putting it, dated correctly and with what looks like the right size (9KB). I'll keep waiting for a few hours at least, but I'm betting it's hung rather than just slow. :-(

Oh, and the process is using between 10-15% of the CPU on a dual Xeon dual core machine, so about half of a single core.
