It's a famous problem, and replication by itself isn't up to providing the solution. Say client1 and client2 each do offline transactions with custX. They both add local customer rows for custX, say with different credit card nos. Even if custX does not yet exist in the central db, you will need something smarter than replication to reconcile that info for the central db.
